New duty on products from outside of EU drops online orders

The total number of goods items in low-value consignments ordered by Finns from outside the EU and declared to Customs in Finland dropped by 66.5% in July compared with June, said Finnish Customs on Thursday. But the number of consignments dropped only by about 20%. From the beginning of July 2026, all online purchases arriving from outside the EU have been subject to payment of customs duty. At the start of July, a new €3 customs duty was imposed for each goods item in online purchases worth up to €150 when such consignments arrive from outside the EU. Such consignments are also referred to as low-value import consignments. Until July, payment of customs duty was only required for online purchases that cost more than 150 euros. The total number of goods items in low-value import consignments ordered by Finns from outside the EU and declared to Customs in Finland plummeted in July to about a third of the number in June. In July, around 1 060 000 goods items in low-value import consignments arrived in Finland, which is 66.5% less than in June. Compared with July 2025, the number of goods items declined by 76.3%. “By contrast, the number of low-value import consignments decreased by only about 20% in July this year compared with June. One consignment typically contains several goods items,” said senior customs officer Antti Hästbacka. In addition, the total value of the low-value import consignments ordered by Finns from outside the EU and declared to Customs in Finland decreased by a third in July compared with June. By contrast, the value of a goods item increased. In January–June, the average value of a goods item in a low-value import consignment was €5.51, whereas the average value in July was already €10.64. “We will only be able to assess the overall situation more reliably in the autumn, as the period under review, from the beginning of July to date, is still too short,” said Hästbacka. Hästbacka pointed out that the Finns interest in importing low-value goods may have decreased, but the steep decline in the number of goods items may also indicate that both online retailers and consumers are seeking to minimise the customs duties. “The consumers may be grouping a greater number of similar goods in one consignment; in which case the customs duty is only charged once. Consumers may be ordering fewer consignments containing several different types of goods to avoid multiplying the customs duty payable,” said Hästbacka. Hästbacka found it likely that sellers are also seeking to minimise customs duties by designing their customs clearance practices in a way that reduces the number of goods items. “Sellers may have modified their IT systems so that similar goods that were previously declared as separate goods items are now declared under the same goods item,” Hästbacka added.

Iran "in bad shape," Trump says, citing weapon production collapse

Trump's comments add another data point to the market's ongoing assessment of how much longer the Iran conflict, and the associated oil price premium, is likely to run. His characterization of Iran's economy as being in severe distress, with triple digit inflation and a collapsing currency, feeds a narrative that Tehran's capacity to sustain the standoff is eroding, which could support expectations of eventual de-escalation and a corresponding pullback in the geopolitical risk premium currently embedded in Brent and WTI. At the same time, his reaffirmation that Iran will not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon signals no near term softening in the underlying US position, meaning traders are unlikely to price out the conflict risk entirely on rhetoric alone. Independent assessments of Iran's remaining missile and drone stockpiles have varied through the conflict, so markets are likely to treat the claim as directional commentary rather than a hard data point. --- Earlier: Wall Street slides as Treasury yields, Walmart miss, and ongoing war hit stocks --- Trump says Iran's war machine and economy are both running on empty, even as he holds the line on its nuclear ambitions. Summary: Trump told WABC Radio that Iran's ability to produce missiles and drones is now much lower than it was five months ago He said Iran's weapon production capacity has weakened to the point where it is now "very hard for them to knock out anything" Trump described Iran as being "in bad shape," citing inflation of around 300% and a currency he called "virtually valueless" He also said Iran's military is not being paid Trump reiterated that preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon remains the central reason for US action against Tehran He said flatly that Iran "cannot have a nuclear weapon, and they won't be having a nuclear weapon" President Donald Trump said Thursday that Iran's ability to manufacture missiles and drones has fallen sharply since the conflict began, telling WABC Radio that Tehran's weapons production capacity is now a fraction of what it was five months ago. "Their capacity to build them is very low right now compared to what it was five months ago," Trump said. "Five months ago they were knocking them out. Now it's very hard for them to knock out anything." Trump painted a bleak picture of Iran's broader economic condition, describing the country as being "in bad shape." He pointed to runaway inflation and a collapsing currency as evidence of the toll the conflict has taken, saying Iran has "inflation that's 300%" and that its currency is "virtually valueless." He added that Iran's military personnel are going unpaid, framing the economic strain as compounding the military pressure Tehran is facing. The comments came in an interview taped for WABC Radio, with portions airing Thursday evening. They follow months of shifting US assessments of Iran's remaining weapons stockpiles, which officials and outside analysts have characterized differently at various points since fighting began in late February. Trump has previously cited figures suggesting Iran retained a meaningful share of its pre-war missile capacity, even as he described the broader military campaign as having severely degraded Tehran's capabilities. Asked about the rationale for continued US action against Iran, Trump returned to the argument that has anchored the administration's position throughout the conflict: preventing Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. "They cannot have a nuclear weapon, and they won't be having a nuclear weapon," he said, leaving no indication that the administration's red line on the issue has shifted even as it points to signs of Iranian weakness elsewhere. The remarks come amid continued friction over the Strait of Hormuz and broader economic measures the administration has threatened against Tehran and any country seen as providing it support.
